The Tasting Room French restaurant made much progress these few years. On top of having its menu refreshed by the new executive chef, its interior was refurbished as well. In the previous setting, what comes to the eyes is a dancing display of vivid blues and light yellow, woven together by a three dimensional netting of thick ropes. The impression was a space connected to maritime culture. Could it be a seaport at the south of the mediterranean?
What we designed for them are a suite of trolleys, what the French call gueridons. These include a cheese trolley, and other service trolleys with two heights. If the bluish and thick piled carpet is the sea, what better style for these trolleys than a style reminiscent of simple wooden boats? The clues were subtle, giving the guests more room for imagination.
We are pleased to find that even after the refurbishment of the restaurant the trolleys still fit seamlessly into the new mood - less oceanic and more plush. It shows how simple designs made well can stand the test of times.
The client was pleasantly surprised with the solid built and sturdiness of the trolleys, even after years of use everyday. When one sees the naked trolley body, with all the substantial wooden frames and interlocking structure, it is not hard to know the reason.
Even the finish is a major endeavour. One of the photos show our craftsman patching (wood pore filling) the underside of a drawer constructed purely of thick solid wood boards, which for contract furniture is usually just a piece of thin plywood at best applied with a thick chemical lacquer, or worst is unfinished.
