When you visit Mandarin Oriental Taipei, do not just be marvelled by the grand splendor of the hotel building. Its fine restaurants may be much more the reason for deep admiration, all stylishly designed by New York based designer Tony Chi, world renowned for the elegant spaces he and his team designed all over the world.
We had the privilege to collaborate with Tony Chi in 3 restaurants: Ya Ge Chinese Restaurant, Bencotto Italian Restaurant, and Cafe Un Deux Trois restaurant. On top of bespoke solid wood furniture, we even created two piano finish spray painted white dining table.
Of all the pieces made, the ones that are the most remarkable are two units of enormous bookshelves. Each measuring W 1720 D 750 H 3530 mm, it is hard to contain one's amazement of the scale when standing right in front of it. The challenge is to ensure the stability of the form, and all the practical logistics considerations are well thought out in advance. Unlike typical contract furniture, any on site correction or fine tuning is extremely difficult if not impossible. We are thankful that the project team did a wonderful job of final execution on site. From the exceptional effect created, the risk taken was well worth it.
Of all the crafting photos below, the one that deserves special attention is the one that shows the meticulous internal structure and finish of a big workstation cabinet for Ya Ge Chinese Restaurant, as well as the one that shows how we experimented with the quantity of down feather to create the exact feel for a relaxed loose seat pad for banquette seats.
